OPERATING SYSTEMS

An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs.

similarities
All operating systems are capable of handling multiple users. All are widely compatible with network management.
All are capable of handling multimedia files.
The screen is very similar, now these three Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems are graphics.

All are able to maintain a user interface in graphic form. All are capable of allowing the development of applications.
Both Windows and Linux require more hardware resources.
Everyone uses windows and a desk. They all have a recycling bin. Everyone has the option of having several accounts to access the system.

differences

although all share certain characteristics common to modern operating systems (multitasking, multiuser), they are so different that it is like comparing pears with apples. They have very different origins and represent three different philosophies

For the user, a recent Linux will not be very different from OSX or Windows. There may be problems with the hardware support of very modern devices, or very exotic, but for a normal home user could be worth any of the three options.
The fundamental difference is that Linux is "Open Source". Not only is it free, but also all of its source code is available to view and modify. We must clarify at this point that Linux is only the kernel, the part of the operating system that serves as an intermediary between the hardware (keyboard, monitor, hard disk, network card ...) and applications (web browser, music player ...) . The rest of the operating system, what a person really uses, has been created under the umbrella of the GNU project: that's why we usually talk about "GNU / Linux".
